Bodrum: Where to Stay and What to See

Which Bodrum bay suits you, what to see, Gümüşlük sunsets, Yalıkavak and Türkbükü, getting there from the airport and frequently asked questions.

Bodrum: Where to Stay and What to See

Where you stay in Bodrum depends on what you want from your holiday: those after nightlife choose Gümbet and Bitez, those after marinas and luxury pick Yalıkavak and Türkbükü, and families looking for calm choose Torba and Gündoğan. Bodrum, known in antiquity as Halicarnassus, lies 242 km from Izmir and is the most populous district of Muğla.

Which Part of Bodrum Suits You?

The Bodrum peninsula is not a single resort but a collection of bays with very different characters. In short:
- Gümbet and Bitez: nightlife, busy beaches, young people and groups of friends.
- Yalıkavak: the marina where large yachts moor, shopping and restaurants.
- Türkbükü: beach clubs on wooden piers and dinners by the water, the summer meeting place of the social set.
- Torba and Gündoğan: calm bays with pine forests, for families with children and villa holidays.
- Gümüşlük: fish restaurants and sunsets.

What Is There to See in Bodrum?

The first place to see in Bodrum is Bodrum Castle, built around 1402 by the Knights of St. John as the Castle of St. Peter. Since 1960 the castle has also housed the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, whose highlights include the amphora exhibition, the Eastern Roman ship and the Uluburun shipwreck.

The Mausoleum, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, was also built in Halicarnassus. Herodotus, known as "the father of history", is also associated with the city.

Why Is Gümüşlük Famous for Its Sunsets?

Gümüşlük is a fishing neighbourhood at the western tip of the peninsula, built where the ancient city of Myndos stood; because it faces west, the sun sets straight into the sea towards Rabbit Island opposite. Dinner at the fish restaurants lined up along the water is one of the best-loved rituals of a Bodrum holiday.

On summer evenings tables in Gümüşlük fill up, so arrive at least an hour before sunset or book ahead.

What Is There to Do in Yalıkavak and Türkbükü?

In Yalıkavak the day revolves around walks in the marina, shopping and dinner. In Türkbükü the days are spent at the beach clubs on the piers and the evenings at restaurants in the same bay.

In both bays, finding parking and waiting for valet service is hard on summer evenings. For those who do not want to drive home at night, a car with a driver is the easiest solution.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Bodrum?

The best time to visit Bodrum for a balance of sea and crowds is June and September. July and August are the hottest and busiest months; the roads between the bays get congested in the evening, and beach clubs and restaurants need reservations.

In May and October the sea cools down, but the weather is ideal for exploring the castle, the museum and the bazaar. In winter life goes on in central Bodrum, but many hotels and restaurants in the bays close. When planning, keep in mind:
- Distances between the bays are long; plan no more than two areas a day.
- Choose early morning for boat trips, as the sea can get choppy in the afternoon.
- Bring a hat, sunscreen and a light layer for the evenings.

How Do You Get from the Airport to Bodrum?

Bodrum can be reached from two airports: Milas-Bodrum Airport is 32 km from the town, while Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport is about 250 km away. From Izmir the drive takes 3–3.5 hours depending on traffic and season.

Who Is Bodrum Suitable For?

Bodrum suits young people looking for nightlife, lovers of marinas and food, large families renting villas and anyone who enjoys boat trips. In July and August traffic and crowds are heavy; those who want a calm beach holiday should choose June or September and stay in quiet bays such as Torba or Gündoğan.

If you are planning a longer Aegean route, you can combine Bodrum with inland Muğla; with its stone houses and bazaar, Muğla old town makes a good half-day stop.
