A Mediterranean Cycling Route Now Runs Through Izmir

EuroVelo, the network of long-distance cycle routes crossing the whole of Europe, added a new 500-kilometer (about 310-mile) stretch through Izmir to its Mediterranean Route, EuroVelo 8, bringing the route's total length to 8,060 kilometers (roughly 5,010 miles). The Turkish section links Dikili, Bergama, Aliaga, Foca, central Izmir, Balikliova, Alacati, Sigacik and the ancient city of Selcuk-Ephesus — so riding it means passing coastal towns and ancient ruins in the same trip.

The Bay's Best Stretch: Bayrakli to Karsiyaka and Bostanli

The section that runs along the northern side of Izmir Bay starts in Bayrakli and continues through Turan, Karsiyaka, Bostanli and Mavisehir. This stretch has a flat, separated bike lane right along the waterfront, which is why it has become one of the city's most popular short rides — you get the whole bay view while you pedal. Looking across at the Konak and Alsancak skyline while riding, especially toward sunset, is a different way to see the city center you may have already visited on foot.

What to Know Before You Ride

The route is free and open to everyone; all you need is your own bike or one from a local rental point. Early morning or late afternoon is the best time, both to avoid the heat and the heaviest foot traffic; in summer the asphalt heats up fast by midday, so that's not the time for a long ride. Pack plenty of water, sunscreen and a bike lock for stopping at seafront cafes. You won't need cash — most businesses along the route accept cards.

Getting From the Airport to Karsiyaka

If you're bringing your own bike, a private transfer from Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport to Karsiyaka in a vehicle with generous luggage space is the easiest way to move it without disassembly. See route details on our Karsiyaka VIP airport transfer page; the drive takes about 35-45 minutes.

Who This Ride Suits

This stretch suits couples, groups of friends and families with older children who want an easy, scenic ride along the water. Adults with some cycling experience will find it comfortable. It's too mild, though, for anyone looking for mountain-biking terrain or a technical course, and young children need close supervision on the sections shared with pedestrians. Business travelers with only a few hours in the city would likely get more out of a short waterfront walk instead.

Combining It With Bayrakli and Mavisehir

Bayrakli, where the ride begins, is also home to the ruins of ancient Smyrna; our piece on Bayrakli's ancient Smyrna history connects the route to the city's deeper past. After the ride, taking the ferry from Bostanli back to Konak is a pleasant way to close the day. Whether you treat it as a short standalone ride or fold it into a half-day plan that mixes history with sea views, this stretch is one of the more relaxed ways to see Izmir.
