Where Is Herakleia and How Do You Get to Lake Bafa?

The ancient city sits inside the boundaries of today's Kapıkırı village, so the ruins begin right next to the houses. From Izmir Airport, the drive runs through Aydın on the Söke-Milas road. A private Izmir Airport to Aydın transfer gets you to the turn at Çamiçi and down to Kapıkırı without waiting on a bus timetable. The last stretch into the village is narrow and winding, so mention it in advance if you are travelling with a large vehicle.

How Did Lake Bafa Form?

Lake Bafa was once the Gulf of Latmos, an inlet of the sea. Alluvium carried down by the Büyük Menderes River gradually cut the gulf off from the open sea, turning it into the lake you see today. That is why the water still carries a trace of salt.

The lake sits at the foot of the Latmos (Beşparmak) range, whose slopes form the backdrop for both the ancient city and the modern village.

Why Does Kapıkırı Village Sit Inside the Ruins?

Herakleia's remains were never fully buried, so the village grew up among the walls and tomb monuments over time. You will find a similar overlap of ruins and daily life at Stratonikeia, though at Herakleia the ruins run right down to the water's edge. About 120 ancient houses have been identified at the site, of which 14 are still in good condition.

What Can You See in Herakleia? Walls, Temple, Theatre

Its walls run 6.5 km and are reinforced by 65 towers. The best-preserved building today is the Temple of Athena, with two columns still standing. Wear flat, sturdy shoes, the ground among the ruins is rocky and uneven.

Practical Tips for Visiting

Early morning is best for both light and temperature; by afternoon the stones heat up and there is almost no shade. Two to three hours is enough to walk the ruins and take in the lake. Bring water, a hat and sunscreen, the village has only a couple of small shops. If you want to see the rock paintings on the Latmos mountains, go with a local guide, there is no marked trail and the terrain is steep.

When Were the Latmos Mountain Rock Paintings Found?

The prehistoric paintings on the rocky slopes of the Beşparmak Mountains were discovered in 1994. Made with red ochre pigment, they date back roughly 8,000 years, far older than Herakleia itself.

Who Should Visit, and Who Shouldn't?

Herakleia suits history lovers, birdwatchers and anyone after a quiet lake view. The site does not work for wheelchair or cane users, the ground is uneven rock and there are no ramps or railings among the ruins. Travelling with small children, keep in mind that the lakeside ruins have no barriers.

How Does It Fit Into a Longer Route?

Herakleia sits along the Milas road that leads on to Bodrum, so travellers heading that way can stop here without a detour. Coming from the Didim side, you can pair it with the Didim and Altınkum guide and still fit in the Temple of Apollo the same day, the two points are about 45 minutes apart by car.
