Why Is Milas Olive Oil Turkey's First Protected Olive Oil?

Milas Olive Oil was registered as a protected designation of origin ("menşe adı") in the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office's geographical indication registry on 6 December 2016. The application was filed by the Milas Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the product is registered under the "solid and liquid fats including butter" category as originating from Muğla province. The registration means the name "Milas Olive Oil" can only be used for oil actually pressed in Milas — oil from elsewhere cannot carry the name. For visitors travelling along the Aegean coast, that's a quick way to understand the story behind the bottle on the shelf.

When Did Milas Table Olive Receive EU Protection?

Milas Table Olive received EU geographical indication protection on 8 September 2023, bringing the number of EU-protected Milas products to two — the olive oil had already secured the same protection earlier. According to Agriculture and Forestry Minister İbrahim Yumaklı, this made it the 14th Turkish product registered by the European Union, joining a list that includes Gaziantep baklava, Aydın figs, and Malatya apricots. The two registrations protect two different products: one liquid oil, one table olive.

Where Can You Taste and Buy the Oil?

Producer shops in central Milas and the weekly market are the places to find the freshest oil right after the harvest. Olive harvesting across the Aegean typically runs between October and December, so that window is when stalls carry the first pressing of the season. When buying, look for the geographical indication logo on the label — the simplest way to tell the genuine product from an imitation. Most producers accept cards, but keeping cash on hand speeds things up at small stalls and village markets. If you want to visit a grove itself, call ahead; these are working farms, not drop-in tourist sites.

Who Is This Stop Right For?

Milas suits food-curious travelers, anyone looking for an authentic souvenir from the kitchen, and those already driving toward Bodrum who don't mind a roughly one-hour detour. Travelers passing through during harvest months may also catch the olive picking itself. It's not a great fit for families with small children or anyone on a tight itinerary — grove visits involve walking and waiting, not a quick photo stop. If time is short, picking up a bottle at a producer's stall delivers the same story without the detour.

How Does Milas Fit Into a Bigger Route?

Milas sits right along the route from İzmir Airport to Bodrum, so it's easy to fold into the İzmir Airport–Bodrum transfer route. Travelers coming via Söke pass Lake Bafa along the way, where the scenery and local producer stalls are both worth a stop

. For another geographically protected flavor on the same route, see our guide to Söke pide. On the Bodrum side, our Bodrum holiday guide covers where to stay and swim once you arrive. On a single-day trip, scheduling the olive oil stop early and saving the beach for the afternoon usually makes for a smoother day.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can buy it from producer shops in central Milas and from the weekly market; a geographical indication logo on the label is a sign of authenticity.

When is the olive harvest?

Across the Aegean, olives are typically harvested between October and December.

A short tasting and stall visit is fine with children, but longer walks through the groves can be tedious for families with young kids.

No, they're different products protected by separate geographical indications: the olive oil received its Turkish designation of origin in 2016, while the table olive received EU protection in 2023.
