Thermal Springs of the Aegean: Which Suits You?

Thermal springs of the Aegean: Balçova, Çeşme Ilıca, Pamukkale and Karahayıt, Akçay and Güre compared, the best season and transport.

Thermal Springs of the Aegean: Which Suits You?

There are four main places for a thermal holiday on the Aegean: Balçova, the closest to Izmir; Ilıca in Çeşme, which combines the sea with thermal water; Pamukkale and Karahayıt with their travertines; and Akçay and Güre at the foot of Mount Ida. Which suits you depends on how much time you have, whether you want to combine it with the sea and how far it is from the airport.

Which Is the Closest Spa to Izmir?

The closest spa to Izmir is Balçova, 8 km from the city centre. The history of the springs, also known as the Baths of Agamemnon, goes back to around 1200 BC; legend has it that Achaean soldiers from the Trojan campaign were healed here.

Balçova is ideal for a half-day thermal break during a short visit to Izmir or a business trip. Details in our Balçova thermal springs guide.

Where Can You Combine the Sea and Thermal Water?

For combining the sea and thermal water in one holiday, Ilıca in Çeşme stands out. Ilıca takes its name from the hot thermal springs rising from the sea bed; many hotels in the area offer pools and spas using this water.

With its long, shallow beach, Ilıca also suits families with children. Details in our Çeşme guide; for Ilıca out of season, see our Ilıca off-season guide.

What Is a Thermal Holiday in Pamukkale and Karahayıt Like?

There are 17 hot springs in the Pamukkale area with temperatures between 35 °C and 100 °C. In Karahayıt, right next to the travertines, the red spring forms red-coloured travertines because of the iron ions it contains; from the 1990s large hotels with thermal pools were built there.

Visiting Pamukkale with a night in Karahayıt lets you spend the evening in a thermal pool and the morning on the travertines. Details in our Pamukkale and Hierapolis guide.

Where Should You Go for a Thermal Holiday in the North Aegean?

In the North Aegean, the water of the Güre springs on the Gulf of Edremit is 64 degrees; it contains sodium, calcium, potassium, magnesium and iron. Akçay's beach and Güre's springs fit into the same day: the sea in the morning, thermal water in the afternoon.

Details in our Akçay and Güre guide. For a nature walk on Mount Ida, see our Zeus Altar hike guide.

Which Spa Suits Whom?

A quick comparison:
- Balçova: those staying briefly in Izmir and business travellers; half a day is enough.
- Çeşme Ilıca: families who want to combine a beach holiday with thermal water.
- Pamukkale and Karahayıt: those who want history and thermal water together; at least one night.
- Akçay and Güre: a calm thermal stop on a North Aegean route; all year round.

What Should You Bring to a Spa?

Although most thermal facilities provide towels and slippers, your own robe, swimsuit and plastic slippers add comfort. Remember to drink water between pools; staying long in hot water can be tiring. Take off your jewellery, as some minerals can tarnish silver.

When Is the Best Time for a Thermal Holiday?

The most enjoyable time for a thermal holiday is autumn and winter; in cool weather the effect of the hot water is felt more and facilities are quieter than in summer. In Pamukkale, the steam from the thermal water on winter mornings makes the view even more striking. If you have a heart, blood pressure or other health condition, consult your doctor before using thermal pools. For the seasons, see our best time to visit the Aegean guide.

How Do You Get from the Airport to the Spas?

Approximate times by private car from Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport: Balçova a short drive, Çeşme Ilıca 1–1.5 hours, Pamukkale about 3 hours, Akçay about 2.5 hours. For older travellers coming for a thermal cure, door-to-door transport with no changes matters.
